Trey Songz - Genesis: The Birth of Songz (Demo/Mixtape)

This is Trey Songz's mixtape/demo CD. This is old Trey Songz when he was grinding out trying to get a deal. This gives you a look at how Trey got started which will give you a better idea of what he might end up like later in his career. Like my grandma always told me "you cant know your future unless you know your past."

Trey Songz's Summary of Genesis

Genesis - the beginning of it all. I was a kid with big dreams. At the age of 15, I met Troy Taylor, My Producer, Mentor and founder of Songbook Ent. He lived in Jersey while I was a high school student living in Virginia. We kept contact throughout the school year & I’d come to Jersey for whatever school breaks we had AND the summers to hone what had now become my craft. While I loved music, like anybody does, making music was new to me. You will hear the Immaturity and youth in my voice, you’ll hear me learning how to record. This is Trey Songz PRE - Gotta Make It. Most of the songs you will hear were recorded in a basement in Teaneck, New Jersey. I slept on a fouton, I woke up to loud music and was made to think of melodies and concepts before I washed my face or brushed my teeth. I could make 10 bucks stretch for 2 weeks because I’d rather not burden my mother. I drove a 88 Honda Accord that had 2 different color doors with no radio back and forth from VA (or Baltimore) to Jersey. This is only one chapter of my story, you’ll learn more as we grow together. I want my fans to know my musical path, know the work I put in and see my growth. Know that ANYTHING is possible. If u believe in YOU like no one else could ever have a work ethic to match and u cannot be stopped. With that being said…I give you GENESIS.

Drake takes time out to speak on a beef with Kardinal along with other Toronto artist. He also speaks on his plan for his career and what he expects from his first album. He also explains his plans for his affiliation with a major label which explains a lot of the confusion surrounding his current representation. Honestly I'm wondering if he's gonna release his fir album independently or on a major label. Oh by the way the freestyle at the end is bananas!

Charles Hamilton's Fees

Recently I heard a rapper say in an interview that he dissed Mickey Factz because he was snobby and was charging to much for a track. So since he is classmates with Charles Hamilton I figured I'd give you an idea of how the freshman class of 09 is charging.

This is straight from Charles Hamilton's Blog

"So The Charles Hamilton Sound has been debated, hailed as brilliant, and discarded as inaudible. Depends on how deep you listen to music. Well... if you want that beautiful enigma to reflect in your music, its gonna cost ya! lol... here you go...

MIXING/ENGINEERING:
$200 a song
$1000 for 5 songs
$300 for mastering one song
$500 for mastering an EP (5-7 songs)
$1000 for mastering an album (8+ songs)

PRODUCTION:
$1500 per beat
$3000 to provide beats for entire project
$5000 to produce entire project (give direction, etc.)
$7500 to executive produce a project (give direction, provide beats for entire project, track-out and master final product)

STIPULATIONS:

I do not condone music that (a) degrades women, (b) promotes violence/drug sales (c) promotes ignorant/negative existentialism (eg. Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, etc.). I do not want my sound or resources to be tied to music that does not progress this generation. I don't care how much you're willing to offer. Also, no weapons allowed in the studio. I shouldn't have to say that, but through conversations with engineers throughout the years, I see that aggresive dialogue is the only way some people can get their point across. Not with that "movement", so "Take your shoes off at the door."

You can either bring me your ProTools sessions, or I'll come to a mutual studio. I don't even wanna fathom being stood up for a session...

I am an avid user of ProTools, and so is Woody (though he is incredible at Logic). For Woody's rates, visit woodysproduce.com."

Irv Gotti Says Jay-Z Is A Better MC Than Eminem

Irv Gotti came by the MTV offices and spoke to us about the list recently. Although he wasn’t as adamant as Joe Budden was about the list being wrong, IG took exception to Eminem ranking in the top spot.

“I got a thing with Eminem,” Gotti said. “This has nothing to do with the beef. I don’t really feel like I have beef with Eminem. This has no hatred or nothing. This is just my opinion on it. Vibe did a thing, and they had him as the #1 rapper. Sh– like that kinda pisses me off. You know why? Because let’s take Eminem’s records. Watch my analogy. Eminem is a great artist, no doubt. He puts words together, he’s witty, a smart lyricist, a great lyricist. But how can we say the guy is the best rapper alive? Look at Hov. He makes real records. Every one of Eminem’s first singles is some clown shit. He’s clowning. Is that the #1? That’s not my #1 rapper, man.”

Gotti said he also factored in the battle element in deciding that Jay-Z is better than Em. He said that back in the day, Slim Shady wouldn’t have a chance against a young Jay — or DMX and Ja Rule, for that matter.

“No disrespect, you’re a great lyricist, but I come from a school — I know they ‘battled’ in ‘8 Mile’ — but I come from where they battled on the streets with guns out,” the head of Murder Inc. said. “They would have put you under pressure. All that ‘off the top,’ they would have put you under pressure. I been to battles with X, Jay and Ja, that was some real shit. Homie, you wouldn’t been able to survive. These niggas was going with written shit. In your grill. X [would say,] ‘I don’t walk, I stalk, living foul.’ Saying some shit you wouldn’t been able to withstand.”

Gotti said Em would survive in a cipher with the big dogs.

“You would have been like, ‘My name is Em and I eat M&Ms. I eat you.’ What?” IG laughed. He said the Detroit legend would have been greeted with three harsh words: ” ‘Shut the fuck up!’ It would have been a ’shut the fuck up’ moment off the top. Dame [Dash] would have been like, ‘Look at him. He’s crunchy! He’s wack!’ Then I look at the singles he put out. They’re all good, but they only work for him. I say take Eminem, and let him say ‘Hard Knock Life.’ Still hot. Now let’s have Jay-Z say the ‘We Made You’ song. They would laugh him out the fucking building. … It would be over.”

Irv finished by saying the best rapper alive has to be Jay-Z or Lil Wayne.

Drake Says Kanye West Is The Most Influential Person On His Sound

With its mix of singing and rapping, Drake’s buzz-building mixtape So Far Gone has drawn comparisons to Kanye West’s latest effort 808s & Heartbreak. For his part, Drake said the Chicago lyricist had a huge impact on his music and even described ‘Ye as “the most influential person” in shaping the young rapper’s sound.

“Before I ever got the chance to meet him, Kanye West shaped a lot of what I do, as far as music goes,” Drake told MTV News on Tuesday night before his show at S.O.B.’s. “We always, always, always took the time to listen to Kanye’s music and appreciate it beyond. We searched the samples and we find out where his inspiration came from, because he has one of the best ears in music, period. He knows how to recognize great music that’s not his. He knows how to utilize great sounds and great music. So before I met him, I had the utmost respect for Kanye West. I’d even go as far as to say he’s the most influential person as far as a musician that I’d ever had in my life.”

Drake said he and ‘Ye initially met in Hawaii, where West has been working on music recently. The interaction was brief at first, but now the two are expected to collaborate on Drake’s upcoming debut album. ‘Ye attended Drake’s New York show this week, and one of West’s managers, Gee Roberson, acts as a co-manger for Drake.

Over the weekend, West returned the accolades in a post on his blog, saying that one of Drizzy’s lines on Young Money’s “Every Girl” is the rhyme of the year.

“Drake said, ‘Do you like girls like I do?? Les-bi-honest!!!!!’ Best line of the year so far!” West wrote in all caps.

As an upstart, Drake said the comment was hilarious and flattering. “I feel like it’s funny, because that’s something he might have said,” Drake said about the line. “[But] it’s an honor that he’s even looking at me as somewhat of an equal, somewhat of a peer. I think he’s one of the greatest to ever do it.”
